Mate Market Size in Asia
In 2022, the Asian mate market increased by 52% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a slight contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Mate Production in Asia
In value terms, mate production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 35%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Afghanistan (X tons) remains the largest mate producing country in Asia, accounting for 84% of total volume. Moreover, mate production in Afghanistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Myanmar (X tons), more than tenfold. Singapore (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Afghanistan stood at +2.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Myanmar (+0.8% per year) and Singapore (+8.6% per year).
Mate Exports
Exports in Asia
Mate exports totaled X tons in 2022, surging by 4.2% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mate exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -17.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic represented the largest exporter of mate in Asia, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2022. Afghanistan (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (5.3%). Lebanon (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Syrian Arab Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mate exports, with a CAGR of +69.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lebanon (+25.9%) and Singapore (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Afghanistan (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Syrian Arab Republic (+74 p.p.), Lebanon (+2 p.p.) and Singapore (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Afghanistan (-70.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X) remains the largest mate supplier in Asia, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 5.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Afghanistan, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Syrian Arab Republic amounted to +69.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+0.3% per year) and Afghanistan (-15.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Mate Imports
Imports in Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of mate was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, mate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Syrian Arab Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of mate. At the same time, Turkey (+22.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Syrian Arab Republic (+4.6 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Lebanon (-2.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mate in Asia, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Syrian Arab Republic was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+26.1% per year) and Lebanon (-9.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
