Matches Market Size in Asia

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Asian matches market, when its value decreased by -6.2% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Matches Production in Asia

In value terms, matches production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 4.6% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

For the third year in a row, Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of matches, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, matches exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Pakistan (X tons). All these countries together held near 16% share of total exports. China (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the matches exports, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. China (-5.1%), Indonesia (-7.2%) and Pakistan (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+21 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while China, Indonesia and Pakistan saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -8.8% and -10.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest matches supplier in Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 7.6% share.

In India, matches exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-9.0% per year) and Indonesia (-7.4% per year).

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of matches decreased by -5.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 9.3%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Mongolia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Georgia (X tons). All these countries together took near 9.3% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Israel (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +60.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 43% of total imports. Yemen, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Israel, Georgia, Oman, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +81.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+20.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
