Melon Seed Market Size in Asia

The Asian melon seed market fell slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced reduction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average melon seed yield in Asia expanded slightly to X tons per ha, growing by 1.7% on the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the melon seed yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, overseas shipments of melon seed were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed exports surged to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China represented the largest exporter of melon seed in Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and India (X tons), together generating a 25% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon seed exports from China stood at -3.3%. At the same time, Turkey (+43.8%), Jordan (+21.7%) and India (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in Asia, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 5.6% share.

In China, melon seed exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+35.4% per year) and Turkey (+9.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Melon seed imports surged to X tons in 2022, increasing by 246% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a strong expansion. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

India prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 86% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), committing a 7.3% share of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the melon seed imports, with a CAGR of +69.6% from 2012 to 2022. Vietnam (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India increased by +86 percentage points.
