Melon Market Size in Asia

The Asian melon market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Melon Production in Asia

In value terms, melon production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of melon production was China (X tons), comprising approx. 64% of total volume. Moreover, melon production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), eightfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 6.5% share.

In China, melon production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (-0.0% per year) and India (+6.0% per year).

In 2022, the average melon yield in Asia declined to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 7.6%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of melons production in Asia dropped to X ha, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in Asia

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of melons decreased by -19% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 75%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China represented the key exporter of melons in Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 39% of total exports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Iran (6.8%), Turkey (6.3%) and Jordan (6.1%). Kazakhstan (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), Oman (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), India (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon exports from China stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Myanmar (+48.0%), Uzbekistan (+39.9%), Afghanistan (+21.1%), Iran (+18.1%), Turkey (+12.3%), Jordan (+11.0%) and India (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2022. Malaysia and Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Yemen (-1.1%) and Oman (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, Iran, Myanmar, Turkey, Afghanistan and Jordan increased by +18, +4.2, +3.6, +2.4, +2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest melon supplier in Asia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 5.5% share.

In China, melon exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+42.6% per year) and Jordan (+13.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of melons decreased by -18.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +26.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) represented the key importers of melons in Asia, together accounting for near 29% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.5% share, followed by Singapore (7.8%), the United Arab Emirates (7.5%), Qatar (6.2%), Kuwait (6.2%) and Japan (6.1%). Pakistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +64.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Japan ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 39% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Bahrain, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 48%.

Among the main importing countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +71.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
