In 2021, the Asian metallised yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Metallised Yarn Production in Asia
In value terms, metallised yarn production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 82%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia
In 2021, approx. X tons of metallised yarn and strip were exported in Asia; increasing by 5.1% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 198%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, metallised yarn exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together creating an 18% share of total exports. Georgia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Georgia (+68.2%), India (+10.7%) and Turkey (+10.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Georgia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +68.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India, China, Turkey and Georgia increased by +4.6, +3.3, +2.1 and +2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest metallised yarn supplier in Asia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+8.4% per year) and India (+5.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 156% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Georgia (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Metallised Yarn Imports
Imports in Asia
In 2021, purchases abroad of metallised yarn and strip decreased by -1.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -14.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, metallised yarn imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -16.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Pakistan represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 50% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Sri Lanka (7.1%), the United Arab Emirates (6.8%) and Turkey (4.6%). The following importers - Iran (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to metallised yarn imports into Pakistan stood at +24.0%. At the same time, Jordan (+58.0%), Sri Lanka (+31.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+6.4%) and Bangladesh (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +58.0% from 2012-2021. Iran experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkey (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Pakistan (+38 p.p.), Sri Lanka (+6.1 p.p.) and Jordan (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Iran (-3.1 p.p.) and Turkey (-17.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 51% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Iran and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Jordan, with a CAGR of +51.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
