The Asian mica market surged to $X in 2021, increasing by 155% against the previous year. Overall, consumption posted strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Mica Production in Asia

In value terms, mica production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mica exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 15%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In 2021, India (X tons) was the major exporter of mica, achieving 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together constituting a 16% share of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mica exports from India stood at -13.3%. At the same time, Japan (+19.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-2.4%) and China (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+5.1 p.p.) and Japan (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of India (-11.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest mica supplier in Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 3.1% share.

In India, mica exports decreased by an average annual rate of -12.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+8.8% per year) and Japan (+3.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+15.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of mica imported in Asia soared to X tons, growing by 33% compared with 2020. Overall, imports posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mica imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +1.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

China prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2021. Japan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mica imports, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012 to 2021. Japan (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mica in Asia, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 6.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +9.2%.

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
