Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +70.3% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Japan was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 25% of total imports. India (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by China (X tons), South Korea (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 40% share of total imports. Pakistan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Turkey (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to natural polymers imports into Japan stood at +3.7%. At the same time, Vietnam (+11.5%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+10.7%), China (+9.1%), South Korea (+8.1%), the Philippines (+7.8%), Pakistan (+6.2%), Thailand (+5.4%), India (+4.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.3%) and Turkey (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.0%) and Saudi Arabia (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, South Korea and Vietnam increased by +2.6, +2.2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest natural polymers importing markets in Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X), together accounting for 58% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +20.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
