The Asian non-wheat flour market expanded slightly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of non-wheat flours, when their volume increased by 1.8% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the largest exporter of non-wheat flours, making up 62% of total exports. India (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 26% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-wheat flour exports from Thailand stood at +2.6%. At the same time, Turkey (+32.0%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+28.5%), Vietnam (+27.5%) and India (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+6.3 p.p.), Vietnam (+3.9 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -2.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest non-wheat flour supplier in Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 4.6% share.

In Thailand, non-wheat flour exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+7.2% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 9.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of non-wheat flours were imported in Asia; with an increase of 7.4% against the year before. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.6% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons), followed by Malaysia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the key importers of non-wheat flours, together committing 60% of total imports. Israel (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +42.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-wheat flour importing markets in Asia were China ($X), Malaysia ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, Israel, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Myanmar, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +40.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
