For the third consecutive year, Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar, which increased by 7.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, oils from coal tar exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Japan (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) represented roughly 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), comprising a 5.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +46.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest oils from coal tar supplying countries in Asia were Yemen ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 39% of total exports.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +39.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in South Korea ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia

In 2021, imports of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar in Asia contracted rapidly to X tons, which is down by -18.1% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, oils from coal tar imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 32%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

China dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 63% of total imports in 2021. South Korea (X tons) took a 6.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by India (6.3%) and the United Arab Emirates (4.9%). Indonesia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to oils from coal tar imports into China stood at +13.3%. At the same time, Cyprus (+149.2%), Indonesia (+36.9%) and India (+25.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cyprus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +149.2% from 2012-2021. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-2.0%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, India, Indonesia and Cyprus increased by +21, +4.7, +3.5 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar in Asia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +6.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-6.2% per year) and India (+19.7% per year).
