Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 11%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ABS copolymers exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Korea (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) represented roughly 69% of total exports in 2021. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (9.2%). Thailand (X tons), Japan (X tons) and China (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 83% of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Thailand, China and Japan, which together accounted for a further 16%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of +10.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 50% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers in primary forms decreased by -1.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers in primary forms. At the same time, Malaysia (+16.2%), India (+10.1%) and Vietnam (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +16.2% from 2012-2021. Thailand and Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 7.4% share.

In China, ABS copolymers imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-5.2% per year) and Vietnam (+9.6% per year).
