From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the artichoke yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The artichoke harvested area reduced modestly to X ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 3.8%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, approx. X tons of artichokes were exported in Asia-Pacific; waning by -45.2% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 110%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artichoke exports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 41%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2022. India (X tons) held an 8.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Australia (6.9%). Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artichokes exports, with a CAGR of +46.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+32.9%) and Australia (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, India (-19.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Singapore, Australia and Vietnam increased by +78, +2.3 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest artichoke supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with an 8.1% share.

In Singapore, artichoke exports expanded at an average annual rate of +28.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+3.8% per year) and India (-13.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, artichoke imports in Asia-Pacific dropped markedly to X tons, falling by -17.3% on the year before. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artichoke imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of artichoke imports in 2022 were Singapore (X tons), French Polynesia (X tons) and Maldives (X tons), together recording 60% of total import. Cambodia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons). All these countries together took near 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (X tons), Japan (X tons), New Caledonia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Australia (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Macao SAR (with a CAGR of +33.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Maldives ($X) and Japan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 60% share of total imports. French Polynesia, Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Malaysia, New Caledonia, Vietnam, Australia, Cambodia and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Macao SAR, with a CAGR of +40.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 23%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
