In 2022, shipments abroad of bananas and plantains decreased by -2.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 78%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Philippines (X tons) represented the largest exporter of bananas and plantains, constituting 48% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by India (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total exports. The following exporters - Myanmar (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total exports.

Exports from the Philippines decreased at an average annual rate of -6.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+47.8%), Vietnam (+47.0%), Cambodia (+41.9%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+23.3%), India (+21.1%) and Pakistan (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +47.8% from 2012-2022. Vietnam (+17 p.p.), Cambodia (+11 p.p.), India (+11 p.p.), Myanmar (+2.9 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Philippines saw its share reduced by -43.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the largest banana and plantain supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Philippines totaled +5.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+49.7% per year) and Cambodia (+57.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 31%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Banana and plantain imports fell to X tons in 2022, waning by -7.6% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Japan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 30% share, followed by South Korea (9.2%).
