Barley Market Size in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Asia-Pacific barley market, when its value decreased by -21.8% to $X. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Barley Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, barley production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 85%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of barley production was Australia (X tons), accounting for 72% of total volume. Moreover, barley production in Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (X tons), sixfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.8% share.

In Australia, barley production increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+2.2% per year) and India (+0.4% per year).

The average barley yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -8.6% against 2021. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The barley harvested area fell to X ha in 2022, which is down by -3% compared with 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 12%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Barley Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, overseas shipments of barley decreased by -8.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 122%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Australia (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.

Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the barley exports, with a CAGR of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022. Australia (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X) also remains the largest barley supplier in Asia-Pacific.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia totaled +5.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Australia.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Australia amounted to +0.8% per year.

Barley Imports

Imports in Asia-Pacific

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of barley decreased by -43.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, barley imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 74%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the major importer of barley, constituting 66% of total imports. Japan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Thailand (8.5%). The following importers - Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and India (X tons) - together made up 9.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to barley imports into China stood at +8.6%. At the same time, Thailand (+71.4%), the Philippines (+57.9%), India (+16.9%) and Vietnam (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +71.4% from 2012-2022. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Thailand (+8.4 p.p.), China (+6 p.p.), the Philippines (+3.2 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -17.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported barley in Asia-Pacific, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 5.8% share.

In China, barley imports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+0.6% per year) and Thailand (+60.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
