In 2021, the Asia-Pacific base station market decreased by -2.2% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, shipments abroad of base stations increased by 41% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-8.2%), Hong Kong SAR (-16.0%) and South Korea (-21.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+18 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.2 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (-8.5 p.p.) and South Korea (-9.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest base station supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 4.1% share.

In China, base station exports shrank by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+61.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-16.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 18%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of base stations increased by 37% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base station imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Japan (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the key importers of base stations in 2021, finishing at near 37% and 32% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together making up an 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Hong Kong SAR (X tons), India (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each recorded a 9.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported base stations in Asia-Pacific, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Japan was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-0.1% per year) and Malaysia (+3.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, declining by -20.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 34%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
