The Asia-Pacific beer market declined slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of beer increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main exporter of beer, generating 42% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together generating a 40% share of total exports. India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to beer exports from China stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Vietnam (+10.5%), Japan (+7.0%) and India (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Korea (-1.7%), Singapore (-5.1%) and Thailand (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, Vietnam and Japan increased by +20, +4.1 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 59% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of beer decreased by -8.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after seven years of growth. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -28.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beer imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -20.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons), distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), Australia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) were the largest importers of beer, together constituting 84% of total imports. New Zealand (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beer in Asia-Pacific, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +16.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+0.7% per year) and South Korea (+11.8% per year).

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 8.3% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
