In 2021, shipments abroad of bismuth increased by 43% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +53.5% against 2019 indices. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bismuth exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 70%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), mixing up a 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+117.8%), Japan (+19.3%), South Korea (+12.3%) and Hong Kong SAR (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +117.8% from 2012-2021. South Korea (+5.6 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.7 p.p.) and Japan (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while China saw its share reduced by -11.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest bismuth supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to -7.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-0.4% per year) and Japan (+15.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 20%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (-3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, bismuth imports in Asia-Pacific soared to X tons, increasing by 16% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 45%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, bismuth imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Hong Kong SAR represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 33% of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by China (12%), Japan (10%), Vietnam (8.9%), India (6%), South Korea (6%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +137.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 61% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Japan, India, Taiwan (Chinese) and Lao People's Democratic Republic, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Among the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +53.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
