In value terms, coloured pencil lead exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China prevails in exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 77% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X units), mixing up a 5.5% share of total exports. Japan (X units), Indonesia (X units), Vietnam (X units), Pakistan (X units) and South Korea (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of black or coloured pencil leads. At the same time, the Philippines (+17.2%), Pakistan (+8.5%) and Japan (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-1.6%), Indonesia (-2.7%) and South Korea (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+4.3 p.p.) and China (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Korea saw its share reduced by -3.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest coloured pencil lead supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were China ($X), Japan ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 83% of total exports. The Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +20.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 203% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while Pakistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Asia-Pacific recorded decline in purchases abroad of black or coloured pencil leads, which decreased by -5.6% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest coloured pencil lead importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Vietnam ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +7.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
