Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, book and brochure exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China represented the major exporter of books, brochures and similar printed matter in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Malaysia (X units), together creating a 24% share of total exports. South Korea (X units), India (X units) and Singapore (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +4.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.2%), India (-10.8%), Hong Kong SAR (-10.9%) and Singapore (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+16 p.p.), South Korea (+2.7 p.p.) and Malaysia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore, India and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -3.4% and -15.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest book and brochure supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +1.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-9.6% per year) and India (+2.6% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 10%. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, book and brochure imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 6.8%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Hong Kong SAR represented the main importer of books, brochures and similar printed matter in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Australia (X units), China (X units), Malaysia (X units), Singapore (X units) and India (X units), together comprising a 38% share of total imports. Japan (X units), the Philippines (X units), South Korea (X units), New Zealand (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Hong Kong SAR decreased at an average annual rate of -13.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, China (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +1.4% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.3%), India (-2.9%), Japan (-3.1%), South Korea (-3.8%), Indonesia (-5.7%), Malaysia (-5.9%), New Zealand (-6.2%), the Philippines (-8.2%), Singapore (-10.1%) and Australia (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+6 p.p.), India (+2.4 p.p.), Malaysia (+1.9 p.p.), Thailand (+1.7 p.p.) and Japan (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Australia and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -19.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Australia ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +5.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 32% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, book and brochure import price increased by +73.0% against 2015 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
