Buckwheat Market Size in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific buckwheat market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a mild decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of buckwheat production, accounting for 87% of total volume. Moreover, buckwheat production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Nepal (X tons), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at -2.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-0.4% per year) and Nepal (+3.3% per year).

The average buckwheat yield reached X kg per ha in 2022, standing approx. at 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the buckwheat yield reached the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the buckwheat harvested area in Asia-Pacific reached X ha, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, overseas shipments of buckwheat were finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 18%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 43%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), constituting a 9.1% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nepal (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -15.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+9.2%), Nepal (+8.1%), Myanmar (+4.9%) and New Zealand (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India, Nepal, Myanmar and New Zealand increased by +8.2, +3.9, +2.7 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest buckwheat supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 6.6% share of total exports. It was followed by New Zealand, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to -10.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+10.2% per year) and New Zealand (-1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, buckwheat export price increased by +77.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 34%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of buckwheat were imported in Asia-Pacific; shrinking by -10.3% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In Japan, buckwheat imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+281.0% per year) and South Korea (+14.8% per year).

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
