Indonesia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.5% share, followed by Thailand (7.1%), Malaysia (6.1%), India (5.7%) and Cambodia (5.2%). Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), China (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +22.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Korea ($X), Australia ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 51% of total imports. China, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese), India, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +19.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
