After five years of decline, the Asia-Pacific non-electric chainsaw market increased by 41% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Non-Electric Chainsaw Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 32%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor decreased by -16.5% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +40.8% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

China dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Japan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor exports, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. China (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest non-electric chainsaw supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +2.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -2% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while China amounted to $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (-1.1%).

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, overseas purchases of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor decreased by -7.8% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

India was the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which accounted for 47% of total imports. Australia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X units), Malaysia (X units) and Indonesia (X units). All these countries together held near 28% share of total imports. China (X units), Singapore (X units), South Korea (X units), Japan (X units), Vietnam (X units) and New Zealand (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor imports, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+12.5%), Thailand (+11.4%), Malaysia (+5.6%), China (+3.7%) and New Zealand (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Australia and South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-1.8%), Japan (-3.0%) and Vietnam (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+34 p.p.), Thailand (+2.7 p.p.) and Indonesia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while China, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Australia and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -3.3%, -4.6%, -5.1%, -9.8% and -10.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 47% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, India, with a CAGR of +16.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
