In 2021, the Asia-Pacific chalk market decreased by -22.6% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw a modest expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chalk production contracted remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 78%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Chalk Exports
Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, shipments abroad of chalks was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, exports saw a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chalk exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Japan represented the main exporter of chalks in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 61% of total exports in 2021. Australia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons), India (X tons) and China (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total exports.
Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chalks exports, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Australia (+15.8%), Vietnam (+7.8%) and India (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, China (-18.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Japan (+47 p.p.), Australia (+9.8 p.p.), Vietnam (+3.6 p.p.) and India (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-45.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Japan ($X) emerged as the largest chalk supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.
In Japan, chalk exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+20.7% per year) and China (-11.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -22.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 69%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Chalk Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, approx. X tons of chalks were imported in Asia-Pacific; with an increase of 18% against the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chalk imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 31% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together generating a 48% share of total imports. Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Australia (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), India (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +30.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Korea (+65.3%), Vietnam (+29.9%) and Macao SAR (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +65.3% from 2012-2021. Australia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nepal (-1.8%), the Philippines (-5.0%), Indonesia (-9.4%), Singapore (-12.3%), India (-18.7%), Pakistan (-25.5%) and Bangladesh (-33.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+30 p.p.), South Korea (+12 p.p.), Macao SAR (+11 p.p.), Vietnam (+7.8 p.p.), Nepal (+5.6 p.p.) and Australia (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Pakistan and Bangladesh saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -67% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X), Macao SAR ($X) and Australia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 60% of total imports.
Macao SAR, with a CAGR of +31.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -9.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 23%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Macao SAR (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
