In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Asia-Pacific chick peas market, when its value decreased by -2.9% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Chick Peas Production in Asia-Pacific
In value terms, chick peas production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a slight slump. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
India (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of chick peas production, accounting for 88% of total volume. Moreover, chick peas production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Australia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Myanmar (X tons), with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in India stood at +4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Australia (-4.2% per year) and Myanmar (-0.9% per year).
The average chick peas yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the chick peas yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of chick peas production in Asia-Pacific dropped modestly to X ha, with a decrease of -3.8% against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 13%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of chick peas decreased by -9.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chick peas exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Australia represented the major exporter of chick peas in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), making up a 27% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+5.7%) and India (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of India (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Australia (-15.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Australia ($X), India ($X) and Myanmar ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 100% share of total exports.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +2.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
For the third year in a row, Asia-Pacific recorded decline in overseas purchases of chick peas, which decreased by -32.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chick peas imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Bangladesh represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 53% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together comprising a 37% share of total imports. Sri Lanka (X tons) and China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Bangladesh increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, China (+87.1%) and Nepal (+15.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +87.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-2.0%), Pakistan (-11.3%) and India (-16.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bangladesh (+35 p.p.), Nepal (+7.1 p.p.) and China (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Pakistan and India saw its share reduced by -11.5% and -36.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chick peas in Asia-Pacific, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bangladesh totaled +3.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-17.8% per year) and Pakistan (-13.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -3.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
