In 2021, shipments abroad of chicken meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 41%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chicken meat exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Thailand was the major exporter of chicken meat in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 47% of total exports in 2021. China (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Hong Kong SAR (6.6%), Australia (6.1%) and Singapore (4.6%). South Korea (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), China ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 85% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +18.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 13%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, chicken meat imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2021, China (X tons) represented the major importer of chicken meat, committing 38% of total imports. Japan (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (10%), Hong Kong SAR (7.7%), Vietnam (7.1%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (4.6%). South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+14.9%), Japan (+3.8%) and South Korea (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-2.7%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+22 p.p.) and the Philippines (+6.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.4 p.p.), Vietnam (-4.9 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-21.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
