The Asia-Pacific common clay market fell modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.1%. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, common clay exports in Asia-Pacific expanded significantly to X tons, increasing by 14% compared with 2021. In general, exports recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, common clay exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +60.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

India represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together achieving a 27% share of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) and China (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the common clay exports, with a CAGR of +30.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+10.2%) and Thailand (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.8%) and China (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+53 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-15.8 p.p.) and Malaysia (-31.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) emerged as the largest common clay supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 17% share.

In India, common clay exports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-0.4% per year) and Thailand (+9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Common clay imports reduced to X tons in 2022, falling by -11.6% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 25%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common clay imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Bangladesh (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented the largest importers of common clay in Asia-Pacific, together reaching near 46% of total imports. Japan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (10%), India (9.8%), Vietnam (5%), Malaysia (4.7%) and China (4.6%).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Japan ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 56% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%.
