Green Coffee Market Size in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, the Asia-Pacific green coffee market increased by 17% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Green Coffee Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, green coffee production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 13%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Vietnam (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of green coffee production, accounting for 57% of total volume. Moreover, green coffee production in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), threefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Vietnam stood at +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+1.0% per year) and India (+0.1% per year).

In 2022, the average green coffee yield in Asia-Pacific was estimated at X tons per ha, growing by 5.5% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the green coffee yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of coffee (green) were harvested in Asia-Pacific; stabilizing at 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1.9%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

After five years of decline, shipments abroad of coffee (green) increased by 4.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 18%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam represented the key exporter of coffee (green) in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. Indonesia (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (13%). The following exporters - Papua New Guinea (X tons), China (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to green coffee exports from Vietnam stood at -3.4%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+4.7%) and India (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.1%), Papua New Guinea (-1.3%) and China (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+4.8 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -8.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest green coffee supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports.

India, with a CAGR of +2.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, overseas purchases of coffee (green) increased by 6.3% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, green coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Japan represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 33% of total imports. South Korea (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by China (X tons), Australia (X tons), India (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 55% share of total imports.

Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of coffee (green). At the same time, Thailand (+8.1%), China (+7.3%), South Korea (+5.8%), India (+5.3%), Australia (+3.8%) and Malaysia (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012-2022. South Korea (+3.8 p.p.), China (+3.2 p.p.), Thailand (+2.1 p.p.) and India (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -9.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest green coffee importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +14.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 33% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
