Composite Paperboard Market Size in Asia-Pacific
The Asia-Pacific composite paperboard market totaled $X in 2021, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 6.7%. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, shipments abroad of composite paper and paperboard decreased by -10.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 46%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, composite paperboard exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Korea represented the main exporter of composite paper and paperboard in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 41% of total exports in 2021. China (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by India (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together held near 48% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to composite paperboard exports from South Korea stood at +5.3%. At the same time, Thailand (+26.6%), India (+19.6%) and Vietnam (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-5.4%), China (-11.1%) and Indonesia (-30.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Korea (+29 p.p.), Thailand (+7.7 p.p.), India (+7.4 p.p.), Vietnam (+4.7 p.p.) and Malaysia (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-6.2 p.p.) and Indonesia (-38.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the largest composite paperboard supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 7.5% share.
In China, composite paperboard exports plunged by an average annual rate of -12.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-1.7% per year) and Malaysia (+2.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Composite Paperboard Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
Composite paperboard imports rose modestly to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 3.9% on 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -30.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, composite paperboard imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) represented the major importer of composite paper and paperboard, generating 31% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Malaysia (9.7%), Indonesia (8.7%), South Korea (6.4%), Thailand (5.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (5.1%) and India (5%).
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+23.2%), Vietnam (+6.3%), South Korea (+6.0%) and Thailand (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-3.7%), India (-4.2%) and Malaysia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+14 p.p.), Vietnam (+4.5 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.2 p.p.) and South Korea (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while India, Indonesia and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -3.1%, -4.7% and -13.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported composite paper and paperboard in Asia-Pacific, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 7.7% share.
In China, composite paperboard imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+8.4% per year) and Malaysia (-6.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 9.3%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
