In 2021, overseas shipments of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof increased by 9.1% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, computing machinery exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 61% of total exports in 2021. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) took a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (6.3%) and Vietnam (4.6%). The following exporters - Japan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - each recorded a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to computing machinery exports from China stood at -1.1%. At the same time, Thailand (+7.2%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.2%) and Vietnam (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Japan (-4.6%), Hong Kong SAR (-5.3%) and Singapore (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+11 p.p.), Thailand (+3.8 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.8 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -2.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest computing machinery supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +1.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+3.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+13.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, computing machinery export price increased by +19.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, computing machinery imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), Japan (X tons), India (X tons), Singapore (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented the largest importers of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof, together generating 76% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Australia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +5.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, computing machinery import price increased by +63.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
