In 2022, overseas shipments of construction sands decreased by -52.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 850% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, construction sands exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 38% of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons). All these countries together took near 56% share of total exports. Australia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -16.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+65.2%), Cambodia (+25.3%) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +65.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Australia (-5.0%) and the Philippines (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+15 p.p.), Cambodia (+13 p.p.), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (+7.4 p.p.) and the Philippines (+6.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while China saw its share reduced by -45% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest construction sands supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 11% share.
In China, construction sands exports shrank by an average annual rate of -5.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+36.2% per year) and the Philippines (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 1,631%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of construction sands, when their volume decreased by -14.2% to X tons. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, construction sands imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 143%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Singapore prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 92% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) and China (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, China (+68.3%) and Thailand (+56.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +68.3% from 2012-2022. Singapore (+24 p.p.) and Thailand (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported construction sands in Asia-Pacific, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 3.9% share of total imports.
In Singapore, construction sands imports increased at an average annual rate of +13.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+39.4% per year) and Thailand (-1.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 194% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
