In 2021, shipments abroad of cotton yarn was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cotton yarn exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
India (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the main exporters of cotton yarn in 2021, resulting at approx. 37% and 30% of total exports, respectively. Pakistan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by China (8%) and Indonesia (6.4%). The following exporters - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malaysia (with a CAGR of +20.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cotton yarn supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were India ($X), Vietnam ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 76% share of total exports. Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +18.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, surging by 25% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cotton yarn was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cotton yarn imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China was the main importer of cotton yarn in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2021. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by South Korea (6.2%). Vietnam (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Japan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+5.4%), Vietnam (+2.6%) and South Korea (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Japan (-2.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (-19.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+12 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cotton yarn in Asia-Pacific, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +3.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bangladesh (+1.9% per year) and South Korea (+1.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild slump. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
