After three years of decline, the Asia-Pacific currant and gooseberry market increased by 12% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of currant and gooseberry production was New Zealand (X tons), accounting for 86% of total volume. Moreover, currant and gooseberry production in New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Australia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in New Zealand stood at -4.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Australia (+1.3% per year) and India (+0.9% per year).

The average currant and gooseberry yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2021, flattening at the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the currant and gooseberry yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

After nine years of growth, overseas shipments of currants and gooseberries decreased by -11% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 86%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

India (X tons) and Australia (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating 93% of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +74.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia totaled +22.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+51.4% per year) and Pakistan (+80.2% per year).

In 2021, overseas purchases of currants and gooseberries decreased by -8.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -40.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Singapore was the major importer of currants and gooseberries in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 64% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), together constituting a 26% share of total imports. Japan (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to currant and gooseberry imports into Singapore stood at +7.8%.
