Date Market Size in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in the Asia-Pacific date market, when its value decreased by -2.6% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Date Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, date production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Pakistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of date production, accounting for 78% of total volume. Moreover, date production in Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (X tons), threefold.

The average date yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield showed a mild setback. In 2022, shipments abroad of dates decreased by -18.9% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, date exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Pakistan represented the major exporter of dates in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), creating a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.4% share of total exports.

Exports from Pakistan decreased at an average annual rate of -8.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+23.2%) and Afghanistan (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-10.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the largest date supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 4.4% share.

In Pakistan, date exports contracted by an average annual rate of -6.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+4.3% per year) and India (+14.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 8.9%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of dates, when their volume decreased by -4.9% to X tons. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, date imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

India was the main importer of dates in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 69% of total imports in 2022. Indonesia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Bangladesh (6.1%) and Afghanistan (4.9%). China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to date imports into India stood at +6.3%. At the same time, Indonesia (+12.7%), Afghanistan (+11.9%) and China (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2022. Bangladesh experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. India (+5.7 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.7 p.p.) and Afghanistan (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bangladesh saw its share reduced by -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dates in Asia-Pacific, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+14.4% per year) and Bangladesh (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 10%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
