Degras Market Size in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, the Asia-Pacific degras market decreased by -10.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption recorded a mild contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, degras production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

Degras exports contracted dramatically to X tons in 2021, falling by -22.4% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 40%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, degras exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the largest exporter of degras in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Australia (4.9%).

Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of degras. At the same time, Australia (+22.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Australia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+16 p.p.) and Australia (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -11.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest degras supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

In Indonesia, degras exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+0.4% per year) and Australia (+19.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 86% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Degras Imports

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Degras imports expanded markedly to X tons in 2021, surging by 7.6% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 12%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sri Lanka was the main importer of degras in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 39% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), Japan (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), India (X tons) and South Korea (X tons), together mixing up a 50% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to degras imports into Sri Lanka stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+31.9%) and South Korea (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +31.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, India (-4.1%), Japan (-5.2%), China (-14.7%) and Pakistan (-20.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sri Lanka (+28 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.6 p.p.), Japan (+3.4 p.p.), South Korea (+3.2 p.p.) and India (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while China and Pakistan saw its share reduced by -12.9% and -23.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest degras importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Sri Lanka ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Pakistan, Taiwan (Chinese) and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Among the main importing countries, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +29.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
