In 2021, the Asia-Pacific diesel-electric locomotive market decreased by -0.6% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of diesel-electric locomotives was finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 100%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diesel-electric locomotive exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 226%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 52% of total exports in 2021. Japan (X units) took a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Korea (13%) and India (18%). Malaysia (X units) and Australia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -17.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+14.9%) and Australia (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, India (-2.9%), South Korea (-8.5%) and Malaysia (-20.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+11 p.p.), Japan (+9 p.p.), South Korea (+4.4 p.p.), Australia (+3.4 p.p.) and Malaysia (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-31 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest diesel-electric locomotive supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Australia and Japan, which together accounted for a further 5.5%.

Among the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +84.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -2.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, diesel-electric locomotive export price increased by +13.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+53.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, diesel-electric locomotive imports in Asia-Pacific surged to X units, jumping by 32% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, diesel-electric locomotive imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 54%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Myanmar (X units), Sri Lanka (X units), Pakistan (X units) and Australia (X units) represented the key importer of diesel-electric locomotives in Asia-Pacific, creating 78% of total import. Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X units), Sri Lanka (X units) and Australia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 47% share of total imports. Vietnam (X units), Bangladesh (X units), India (X units) and New Zealand (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Indonesia (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Australia ($X) and India ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 70% of total imports.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +56.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per unit), while Myanmar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+17.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
