Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of diethanolamine and its salts. At the same time, the Philippines (+62.6%), Singapore (+36.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+10.3%) and South Korea (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +62.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-10.6%) and Japan (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+14 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+9.9 p.p.), Malaysia (+4.1 p.p.) and the Philippines (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Japan and Thailand saw its share reduced by -12.5% and -18% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest diethanolamine supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 14% share.

In Malaysia, diethanolamine exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.1% per year) and Singapore (+22.0% per year).

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, purchases abroad of diethanolamine and its salts decreased by -11.6% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, diethanolamine imports amounted to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. South Korea (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to diethanolamine imports into China stood at +8.4%. At the same time, Thailand (+31.2%), Singapore (+14.2%), India (+7.7%), Malaysia (+5.9%) and Indonesia (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +31.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+6.1 p.p.) and Singapore (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diethanolamine and its salts in Asia-Pacific, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 4.3% share.
