After two years of decline, the Asia-Pacific direct dye market increased by 7% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Direct Dye Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, direct dye production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of direct dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, direct dye exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) was the major exporter of direct dyes and preparations based thereon, achieving 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), comprising a 20% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to direct dye exports from India stood at +9.5%. At the same time, Indonesia (+40.3%) and Thailand (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +40.3% from 2012-2021. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+23 p.p.) and Indonesia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Taiwan (Chinese) and China saw its share reduced by -7% and -10.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest direct dye supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +7.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+0.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of direct dyes and preparations based thereon were imported in Asia-Pacific; picking up by 13% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, direct dye imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of direct dyes and preparations based thereon, namely China, Japan and Indonesia, represented more than third of total import. South Korea (X tons) took an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (8.2%), Vietnam (7.5%), Bangladesh (6.2%) and the Philippines (5.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest direct dye importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Japan ($X), China ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports. The Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +37.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
