In 2022, the amount of dried prunes exported in Asia-Pacific soared to X tons, growing by 23% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the key exporters of dried prunes in 2022, resulting at near 28% and 27% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Australia (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons), together creating a 31% share of total exports. The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - together made up 8.2% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Australia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 70% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Australia, with a CAGR of +17.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

For the third year in a row, Asia-Pacific recorded growth in supplies from abroad of dried prunes, which increased by 42% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +77.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dried prune imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) was the key importer of dried prunes, making up 41% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together mixing up a 38% share of total imports. Australia (X tons), India (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried prune imports into China stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Pakistan (+52.6%), India (+17.2%), Vietnam (+1.3%) and South Korea (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +52.6% from 2012-2022. Australia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, New Zealand (-3.3%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.6%), Malaysia (-4.6%) and Japan (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+22 p.p.), Pakistan (+19 p.p.) and India (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-1.8 p.p.) and Japan (-23.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dried prune importing markets in Asia-Pacific were China ($X), Japan ($X) and Australia ($X), together comprising 71% of total imports. New Zealand, South Korea, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Malaysia and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +43.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
