The total number of producing animals indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, number of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production decreased by -1.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the number of producing animals increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of duck and goose meat increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, duck and goose meat exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 12% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to duck and goose meat exports from China stood at +1.0%. At the same time, Malaysia (+20.1%) and Thailand (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012-2022. China (+14 p.p.), Thailand (+8.6 p.p.) and Malaysia (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest duck and goose meat supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In China, duck and goose meat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+14.7% per year) and Malaysia (+25.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, duck and goose meat export price increased by +64.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

For the fourth year in a row, Asia-Pacific recorded decline in overseas purchases of duck and goose meat, which decreased by -3.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 15%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, duck and goose meat imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X tons) represented the main importer of duck and goose meat, generating 65% of total imports. Japan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Macao SAR (6.2%). Singapore (X tons), China (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Hong Kong SAR decreased at an average annual rate of -2.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cambodia (+46.2%), Singapore (+16.6%), Japan (+5.0%) and Macao SAR (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +46.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, China (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Japan, Singapore, Cambodia and Macao SAR increased by +5.1, +3.5, +2.5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported duck and goose meat in Asia-Pacific, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Macao SAR, with a 5.5% share.

In Hong Kong SAR, duck and goose meat imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-4.9% per year) and Macao SAR (+8.8% per year).
