In 2022, the average durum wheat yield in Asia-Pacific shrank modestly to X tons per ha, reducing by -1.9% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 5.5%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of durum wheat decreased by -36.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 289%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 436%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Australia was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 53% of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (21%).
Exports from Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +1.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-28.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Australia (+44 p.p.) and Pakistan (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of India (-64.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest durum wheat supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-27.6% per year) and Pakistan (-1.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 27% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat export price increased by +109.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 65%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Durum Wheat Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of durum wheat decreased by -31.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, durum wheat imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 101%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the largest importer of durum wheat, generating 46% of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Japan (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - together made up 6.3% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +126.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported durum wheat in Asia-Pacific, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 17% share.
In China, durum wheat imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+17.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+44.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
