Eggplant Market Size in Asia-Pacific

China (X tons) remains the largest eggplant producing country in Asia-Pacific, accounting for 71% of total volume. Moreover, eggplant production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (X tons), threefold.

In 2022, the average eggplant yield in Asia-Pacific fell to X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of eggplants (aubergines) in Asia-Pacific declined slightly to X ha, leveling off at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to eggplant production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2022, overseas shipments of eggplants (aubergines) decreased by -5% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, eggplant exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), mixing up a 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +36.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 3.5% share.
In China, eggplant exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+3.2% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+23.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant export price decreased by -6.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 22%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2022, the amount of eggplants (aubergines) imported in Asia-Pacific shrank to X tons, with a decrease of -6.5% on the previous year. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, eggplant imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Singapore (X tons) represented the major importer of eggplants (aubergines), committing 62% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Hong Kong SAR (8.7%), Brunei Darussalam (8.3%) and Macao SAR (6.5%).
Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+23.1%) and Macao SAR (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2022. Hong Kong SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+12 p.p.), Brunei Darussalam (+7.3 p.p.) and Macao SAR (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-4.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported eggplants (aubergines) in Asia-Pacific, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Macao SAR, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore amounted to +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (+5.9% per year) and Macao SAR (+8.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
