In value terms, electronic chip production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.2% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of electronic chips increased by 40% to X units, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, electronic chip exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units), China (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), South Korea (X units) and Malaysia (X units), together achieving a 40% share of total exports. Japan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to electronic chip exports from Hong Kong SAR stood at +20.4%. At the same time, Malaysia (+23.6%), South Korea (+16.5%), China (+6.4%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Japan (-1.7%) and Singapore (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (+27 p.p.), Malaysia (+3.1 p.p.) and South Korea (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while China, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese) and Singapore saw its share reduced by -3.5%, -5.8%, -9.1% and -18.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 57% share of total exports. Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+12.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, approx. X units of electronic chips were imported in Asia-Pacific; therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, electronic chip imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Hong Kong SAR was the main importer of electronic chips in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 38% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by China (X units), Singapore (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Japan (X units), together generating a 44% share of total imports. The following importers - Malaysia (X units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) - each recorded a 7.9% share of total imports.

Imports into Hong Kong SAR increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+19.4%), China (+3.9%), Malaysia (+2.7%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-3.7%) and Japan (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Hong Kong SAR (+11 p.p.), Vietnam (+5.1 p.p.) and China (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-4 p.p.) and Singapore (-8.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), Vietnam, Malaysia and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +22.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, rising by 26% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, electronic chip import price increased by +101.9% against 2012 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
