The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +70.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the three major exporters of exercise books, namely India, China and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Malaysia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 11%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in China ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of exercise books, when their volume decreased by -7.5% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, exercise book imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +90.6% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 32%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, Afghanistan (X tons), distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the key importers of exercise books, together mixing up 65% of total imports. The following importers - Papua New Guinea (X tons), Fiji (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), Cambodia (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported exercise books in Asia-Pacific, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Afghanistan totaled +14.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+19.1% per year) and Australia (-0.8% per year).

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
