China prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 73% of total exports in 2021. Japan (X tons) held a 7.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Korea (6.8%) and Singapore (5.8%). India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to filter paper exports from China stood at -1.4%. At the same time, South Korea (+33.7%), India (+21.9%), Singapore (+13.4%) and Japan (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +33.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Korea (+6.2 p.p.), Japan (+4.6 p.p.), Singapore (+3.9 p.p.) and India (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-11.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest filter paper supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+5.4% per year) and South Korea (+41.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the key importers of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape in Asia-Pacific, together reaching approx. 27% of total imports. Myanmar (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), China (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and Japan (X tons). All these countries together took near 51% share of total imports. The Philippines (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +53.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 36% of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 56%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +30.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
