Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons), distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the largest exporters of flours, meals and pellets of fish, together committing 94% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +39.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fish meals and pellet supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were China ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 87% of total exports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +27.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fish meals and pellet export price increased by +101.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 65% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+23.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
After three years of decline, purchases abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish increased by 9.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a slight reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Japan (X tons) was the key importer of flours, meals and pellets of fish, comprising 63% of total imports. Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (9.1%) and China (7.2%).
Imports into Japan decreased at an average annual rate of -2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (+64.9%), Malaysia (+21.7%) and China (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic People's Republic of Korea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +64.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Malaysia and China increased by +13, +7.6 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish in Asia-Pacific, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic People's Republic of Korea, with a 6.8% share.
In Japan, fish meals and pellet imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+17.4% per year) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (+71.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
