The average flax fiber yield declined to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -2.3% on the previous year. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the flax fiber yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of flax fiber in Asia-Pacific reached X ha, growing by 2.8% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to flax fiber production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of flax fiber decreased by -36.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 76%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, flax fiber exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) and India (X tons) represented roughly 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together constituting a 22% share of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Japan (with a CAGR of +15.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest flax fiber supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were China ($X), India ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports. Pakistan and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

Among the main exporting countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +31.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 29%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -9.9% against 2020 indices. In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flax fiber in Asia-Pacific, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.

In China, flax fiber imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+23.2% per year) and Vietnam (+111.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, surging by 14% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
