The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, garlic imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +30.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Indonesia was the largest importer of garlic in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 54% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Pakistan (5.4%). The following importers - Bangladesh (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+18.1%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+17.7%), Pakistan (+7.6%), Bangladesh (+7.2%), Malaysia (+5.9%), Sri Lanka (+3.7%), Singapore (+3.6%) and Japan (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+2.1 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Korea (-2.1 p.p.) and Indonesia (-3.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported garlic in Asia-Pacific, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 5.3% share.

In Indonesia, garlic imports increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+4.5% per year) and Vietnam (+21.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
