In 2022, shipments abroad of gingerbread increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, gingerbread exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Thailand (X tons), Japan (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) represented the major exporter of gingerbread in Asia-Pacific, making up 67% of total export. Bangladesh (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by New Zealand (with a CAGR of +114.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the largest gingerbread supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Japan stood at +30.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: New Zealand (+89.2% per year) and Thailand (-4.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Gingerbread Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2022, approx. X tons of gingerbread were imported in Asia-Pacific; with a decrease of -57.2% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 131%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, gingerbread imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
Australia was the major importer of gingerbread in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2022. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Japan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Timor-Leste (X tons) and India (X tons) - each finished at a 4.3% share of total imports.
Imports into Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+67.8%), Timor-Leste (+45.3%), Japan (+22.5%), Singapore (+14.9%), Malaysia (+13.0%), New Zealand (+12.3%), India (+9.5%) and Vietnam (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +67.8% from 2012-2022. Lao People's Democratic Republic (+11 p.p.), Malaysia (+5.2 p.p.), Singapore (+4.9 p.p.), Japan (+4.2 p.p.), New Zealand (+4 p.p.), Timor-Leste (+2.1 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Australia saw its share reduced by -16.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gingerbread in Asia-Pacific, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 5.3% share.
In Australia, gingerbread imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+69.0% per year) and Japan (+11.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 123% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
