Hazelnut Market Size in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, the Asia-Pacific hazelnut market increased by 13% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hazelnut Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, hazelnut production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 291%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of hazelnut production was China (X tons), comprising approx. 96% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), more than tenfold.

In China, hazelnut production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021.

The average hazelnut yield rose slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, growing by 3.5% on 2020. In general, the yield, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the hazelnut yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The hazelnut harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2021, flattening at the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the hazelnut harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

Hazelnut exports shrank markedly to X tons in 2021, falling by -75.1% against the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Hong Kong SAR (X tons) represented the main exporter of hazelnuts, constituting 79% of total exports. China (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from Hong Kong SAR stood at -32.9%. At the same time, China (+16.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+15 p.p.) and Vietnam (+4.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -19.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

In Hong Kong SAR, hazelnut exports decreased by an average annual rate of -34.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+16.7% per year) and Vietnam (-18.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 35%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, imports of hazelnuts in Asia-Pacific expanded modestly to X tons, growing by 4.9% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hazelnut imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) and China (X tons) dominates imports structure, together mixing up 93% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +47.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Asia-Pacific, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 31% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam stood at +5.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+47.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-25.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
