In 2021, the Asia-Pacific rendered pig fat market increased by 33% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

For the fourth consecutive year, Asia-Pacific recorded growth in shipments abroad of lard and other pig fat (rendered), which increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 75%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rendered pig fat exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 164% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Japan was the major exporter of lard and other pig fat (rendered) in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 46% of total exports in 2021. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 31% share, followed by China (12%) and South Korea (8.2%). Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +43.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 94% of total exports.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +23.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, rendered pig fat export price increased by +88.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 51%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of lard and other pig fat (rendered) decreased by -7.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 374%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, rendered pig fat imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 255% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of rendered pig fat imports in 2021 were Singapore (X tons), together finishing at 96% of total import.

Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lard and other pig fat (rendered) imports, with a CAGR of +47.6% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Singapore (+61 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
