In 2022, the Asia-Pacific lignite market decreased by -4.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption saw a pronounced decline. In value terms, lignite exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. Indonesia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), constituting an 8.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +11.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of the Philippines (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest lignite supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -19.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 82%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined notably in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Indonesia totaled $X per ton.

In 2022, lignite imports in Asia-Pacific declined sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -21.6% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
